20 Apr Alex Connor Shines on Irish U21 Debut in Galway
Navan RFC’s Alex Connor marked a major milestone in her rugby journey on Saturday afternoon, making her international debut for Ireland Women’s Under 21 Rugby Team in a commanding 55–8 victory over Italy at Dexcom Stadium in Galway.
Starting at scrum-half, Connor delivered an assured and composed performance, with sharp distribution helping to keep the Irish backline moving at pace and maintaining attacking momentum throughout the game.
It was a hugely proud moment not only for Connor, but also for her family, coaches, teammates and the wider Navan RFC community. She received her international jersey on Thursday evening alongside fellow Navan native and senior Ireland international Sam Monaghan.
Connor’s achievement is made even more notable by the fact that she was the only starting player from a club outside the top tiers of the women’s game, underlining both her talent and determination.
A product of the Navan RFC minis and youths,girls pathway, Connor has progressed steadily through the ranks, captaining Leinster Under 18s and representing the North-East region. A talented dual athlete, she also enjoyed success in Gaelic football with Simonstown Gaels and Loreto St Michael’s Navan, where she was part of the All-Ireland Senior “A” winning team in 2023.
Her rugby development has accelerated in recent seasons through involvement with Leinster Rugby’s senior extended squad and the IRFU Women’s National Talent Squad. More recently, she featured prominently with the Wolfhounds in the Celtic Challenge, including their title-winning final.
Ireland now turn their attention to Round Two, with a trip to face England Women’s Under 21 Rugby Team in Coventry on Saturday 2nd May.
Connor’s rise continues to inspire the next generation at Navan RFC, highlighting what can be achieved through dedication, hard work and belief.
