St. Stephen’s Day Rugby Brings Festive Cheer to Balreask Old

Navan RFC enjoyed a fantastic St. Stephen’s Day as players, supporters, and families gathered at Balreask Old for the club’s annual festive rugby run-out.

There was plenty of on-field action and yuletide spirit on the sidelines as the club continued its much-loved Christmas tradition with a social rugby blitz that celebrated both the game and the wider Navan RFC community.

Proceedings began with a lively Tag Rugby Challenge, featuring players from the Friday night social tag group alongside the Under-18.5 Girls and senior women’s players. The fast-paced, good-humoured contest set the tone for an enjoyable afternoon and was played in great spirit throughout.

This was followed by an entertaining Men’s Under-20s v Veterans XV clash, bringing together players past and present for a festive showdown. Played over two 25-minute halves in a “power hour” format, the match removed scrums and line-outs, encouraging free-flowing rugby with plenty of flair — and just enough physicality to keep it competitive.

The result was an excellent spectacle for the assembled crowd, who enjoyed the action in true Christmas mood. The event was a celebration of the social side of rugby, showcasing Navan RFC’s adult playing pathways while reconnecting members of the club community during the holiday season.

It was particularly special to see several returning veterans pull on the Navan jersey once more, as well as welcoming home club members who were back in Navan for the festive period.

A great day was had by all, and Navan RFC extends its thanks to everyone who took part and helped make the St. Stephen’s Day gathering another memorable occasion at Balreask Old.
