Navan RFC’s Under-16 Boys kicked off their North-East League campaign in brilliant style on Sunday, 6th September, securing a comprehensive 29-10 victory away to Ardee RFC.
Despite tricky, windy conditions, Navan delivered a clinical five-try performance highlighted by sharp attacking play and relentless defensive intensity.
Ardee opened the scoring early in the contest, crossing for the first try after their centre broke through off a solid scrum platform under the Navan posts.
Navan’s response was immediate and fierce. Senan Kavanagh set the defensive tone for the afternoon with a monster tackle, driving the Ardee Number Eight back ten metres to ignite the team.
Settling into an unstoppable attacking rhythm, Navan ran in four unanswered tries before the break. Shay McMahon, Jack Keane, Donnacha Roe, and Ashan Dharmasena all crossed the line in a rampant opening 35 minutes. The highlight of the half came via a spectacular team move: out-half Lucas Heverin weighted a brilliant 30-metre grubber kick through, which was gathered at top speed by Roe before offloading for Dharmasena to dive over. Jack Colgan battled the wind to add a conversion, putting Navan in firm control at 22-5 at half-time.
The second half proved to be a more stop-start affair as both sides traded a try apiece, with Dharmasena touching down for his second score of the afternoon with Colgan converting to seal a convincing 19-point victory.
