Navan RFC’s Under-16 Boys made it two wins from two in the North-East League on Sunday, 13th September, securing a hard-fought 35-19 derby victory against a resilient Boyne RFC side at Balreask Old.
In a highly competitive and physical encounter, a hat-trick from Ted Duffy and a flawless kicking performance from out-half Jack Colgan proved decisive for the hosts.
Navan burst out of the blocks early as Ashan Dharmasena continued his fine try-scoring form. After Jack Colgan delivered a weighted grubber kick, Liam Crinion gathered brilliantly to build the attack, allowing Dharmasena to pick up and score.
Navan doubled their advantage shortly after following dynamic work from the forward pack. Oisin Breathnach controlled the breakdown to set up slick forward interplay, before a powerful carry from Dharmasena released Ted Duffy to touch down for his first score.
Boyne rallied strongly over the next 15 minutes, pressuring the Navan defence. Just before the interval, a superb exchange between Logan Redelinghuys and Charlie Byrne on a switch line almost yielded another Navan score, falling just short of the line. Boyne capitalized on their late momentum, crossing for a well-worked try in the corner with a fine conversion to leave the half-time score at 14-7.
Boyne carried that momentum into the second half, crossing for an early try in the 4th minute to close the gap. Navan refocuses immediately and responded in emphatic style. A fine line break by Donnacha Roe was followed by a clever kick through from Senan Kavanagh; when Kavanagh was tackled off the ball in the act of scoring, the referee awarded a penalty try.
Duffy then took control of the final quarter, running in his second try following seamless handling across the backline. Boyne refused to yield and broke through for a late try of their own, but Duffy closed out the contest in style, completing his hat-trick with a sharp break in midfield and clever footwork to cross the line. Jack Colgan was in stellar form off the kicking-tee all afternoon, kicking five conversions out of five to complete the 35-19 win.
