Navan Rugby Football Club held its 97th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Friday evening, 5th June 2026, in the Long Bar of the Balreask Old Clubhouse.
Club Chairman Mr. Stephen Mackarel presided as Meeting Chairman over a well attended AGM that addressed critical cultural challenges, celebrated historic milestones on and off the pitch, and ratified the executive leadership for the 2026/2027 season.
Club Vision, Culture & Strategic Milestones
Club Chairman Stephen Mackarel outlined the core objective for the upcoming season: refocusing the club on its foundational vision, aspiring to the next competitive level, developing an effective style of play, remaining financially independent, and embedding Navan RFC firmly within the County Meath community.
Honorary Secretary Gerry Sweeney presented a comprehensive review of the season, echoing the Chairman’s concerns regarding club culture.
- The Navan RFC Strategic Plan & Pathway: The club formally ratified a brand-new, player-centred development framework aligned with the IRFU’s Long Term Player Development (LTPD) model. Developed through the hard work of Aoife Ryan and Leo Finlay, this strategic blueprint aims to streamline technical coaching and physical conditioning across all age grades, creating a self-sustaining conveyor belt of local talent from Under 6s straight through to the adult Men’s and Women’s 1st XVs.
- Zero-Tolerance on Referee Abuse: Both the Chairman and Honorary Secretary addressed a critical challenge regarding the club’s reputation. Following a Leinster Branch disciplinary hearing that saw the club hit with a reactivated fine and a loss of international ticket allocations due to referee abuse, Navan RFC is enacting a strict ZERO-tolerance approach. Backed by a newly formalized Disciplinary Framework Document, the club has introduced the Navan RFC Club Member Passport. Mandatory workshops will be rolled out across all squads prior to the new season, led by senior club referees, to reset the sideline and playing culture at Balreask Old.
Director of Rugby & Section Reports
Adult Men’s Rugby: Fresh Beginnings
Director of Rugby Karl Hogan detailed a year of transition across the club. While the Men’s Senior 1st XV endured a frustrating campaign in the Energia All-Ireland League (AIL), finishing ninth in Division 2B, the meeting noted several structural positives. Training numbers were remarkably high during the first half of the year, and the Under 20s panel boasted record numbers and excellent squad morale. Crucially, seven Under 20s players successfully graduated to make their senior AIL debuts, illustrating the strength of the club’s youth structures. With the appointment of incoming Men’s Head Coach Dan Van Zyl, the club is primed for an ambitious, competitive reset.
Women’s Rugby: A Historic Campaign
Presented by incoming Women’s coordinator Aoife Ryan on behalf of 1st XV Captain Anna Bolger, the report highlighted an extraordinary, record-breaking season under Head Coach Jackie Shiels:
- Unprecedented Depth: Navan RFC became one of the very few clubs in Ireland to competitively field three adult women’s teams in a single season.
- Silverware: The Women’s 1st XV finished as runners-up in Leinster Division 1 and made history by capturing the Leinster Paul Flood Cup for the first time. The 3rd XV memorably won the Leinster Division 6 league title, while the 2nd XV put in a strong showing by winning half of their fixtures in Division 3.
- Representative Honours: Rosie Searle and Alex Connor earned international caps at Ireland U20 and U21 levels respectively, while also lining out in the Celtic Challenge tournament. Both players, along with Shona White, have been named in the extended Leinster Senior squad for the upcoming summer Interprovincials.
- Coaching Excellence: Player/Assistant Coach Michelle Claffey brought elite experience to the national setup, serving as Assistant Coach to the unbeaten Ireland Under-18 Girls team at the Six Nations Festival in England over Easter.
Youths, Minis & Community Rugby
The youth and mini structures continue to pack the pitches at Balreask Old every weekend. Special praise was reserved for the Blue Dragons Inclusive Tag Rugby team, celebrated as the hardest-working squad in the club, who represented the Navy and Sky Blue crest with immense pride at blitzes throughout the country.
Financial State & Infrastructure Investment
Honorary Treasurer Darra MacNamara reported that the club concluded its financial year at the end of April in an overall positive state. However, a significant planned reduction in cash reserves was highlighted, driven entirely by major capital investments into the club’s long-term future. These included the construction of the brand-new gymnasium facility and extensive upgrades to the playing surfaces at Balreask Old.
Chairman Stephen Mackarel reminded the room how much that the club costs over to operate on a week-to-week basis, stressing the critical importance of volunteerism, local sponsorship, and membership compliance as economic headwinds make fundraising more challenging.
President’s Address & Accolades
Club President Eddie Lyons expressed what a tremendous honor it has been to represent Navan RFC nationwide during the club’s historic centenary year. He paid a special tribute to outgoing committee members Jane McSherry and Darra MacNamara for completing a staggering volume of work during their tenures.
- Club Person of the Year: President Eddie Lyons enthusiastically announced Catherine Brady as the Club Person of the Year. Catherine was recognized for her monumental leadership in producing the universally lauded Navan RFC Centenary Book, as well as committing to the club’s future as official Club Historian and Archivist.
- Honorary Life Memberships: To mark the conclusion of the centenary season, the Executive Committee bestowed the club’s highest honor, conferring Honorary Life Memberships upon six stalwarts who have given decades of exemplary service to Balreask Old:

- Leo Finlay

Committee Elections & Motions
The audited financial accounts were formally proposed and accepted by the membership, and the club’s auditors were officially appointed for the incoming year. A constitutional motion seeking to amend Club Rule 10 (proposing structural updates to the composition of the Executive Committee) was put to the floor, debated, and subsequently defeated by the voting membership present.
Under Any Other Business (AOB), members requested and received detailed clarifications regarding the structural and performance factors that led to the end of season changes in the Senior Men’s coaching staff.
