23 Aug Navan RFC Expresses Sympathy on the Passing of Gretta Fitzsimons
Everyone at Navan RFC is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Margaret (Gretta) Fitzsimons (née Murray), matriarch of the well-known Navan publican family, who passed away peacefully on Saturday, 22nd August 2026.
Originally from Galway, Gretta settled in Navan in 1960 alongside her late husband, former public representative Paddy Fitzsimons, when they established their iconic family pub on Trimgate Street. Over the decades, the Fitzsimons family became an integral part of the commercial, civic, and sporting fabric of our town.
The Fitzsimons family shares a proud, long-standing association with Navan Rugby Football Club. Paddy’s brother, former club captain Mick Fitzsimons, famously skippered Navan’s 1st XV to historic victory in the 1964 Provincial Towns Cup final replay against Kilkenny, a milestone that remains one of the most cherished moments in our club’s history. Beyond the pitch, the Fitzsimons family and Paddy Fitzsimons Public House have been steadfast friends and supporters of Navan RFC across generations.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Gretta’s children Padraig, Dara, Arlene, and Jarlath, her eleven beloved grandchildren, her extended family, and her wide circle of friends.

- Funeral Mass: Monday, 24th August at St. Mary’s Church, Navan.
- Burial: Afterwards in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Navan.
