Navan RFC’s Under-13 Boys kicked off their pre-season preparations in fantastic fashion on Sunday morning, 6th September, securing an impressive 48-14 victory over Dublin side St Mary’s at Balreask Old.

St Mary’s travelled to Navan with two distinct match squads, playing two 25-minute periods to give all players maximum game time and competitive experience ahead of the new season.

In the first period, St Mary’s struck first with an early try down the right wing, but Navan responded with relentless attacking intent. Out-half Laurence McGahey controlled the tempo superbly, pairing with Riley Walsh to carve open the opposition defence. Walsh produced a sensational, near length-of-the-pitch break, while Oisín Green consistently dented the visitors’ line with powerful carries before powering over for a try.

At fullback, Cillian O’Hara was rock-solid under high pressure, launching sharp counter-attacks to gain vital territory. After St Mary’s scored a second, Navan finished the half on top as Johnny Neary finished off a sweeping move in the right-hand corner for Navan’s fourth try of the period. McGahey added two conversions to leave Navan ahead 24-14 at the break.

In the second period, with fresh teams introduced for the second half, Navan raised the physicality and kept the Dublin side scoreless. Frankie Feeney lit up the backline, making two scintillating breaks and finishing both opportunities to score a brace.

Up front, Michael McAteer led a relentless tackling display from the pack, while Oscar Foley drove forward with strong, direct carries. The moment of the match came through seamless forward-and-back link play, resulting in Ryan Clark breaking free up the left wing. Prop Morgan Carr capped off a dominant period by driving over from short range, with Conor Cheevers slotting two conversions to complete the 48-14 win.

It was a magnificent squad performance from front to back, with notable displays on the day from Riley Walsh, Frankie Feeney, Laurence McGahey, Cillian O’Hara, Ryan Clark, Oisín Green, Michael McAteer, and Morgan Carr.
The U13 Boys can take immense confidence from their performance as they look ahead to the official league season!

Afterwards the players got the brushes out and tidied up the dressing room ahead of the next team to use the facility.

The morning concluded in true Navan RFC fashion, with parents supplying a fantastic post-match spread of food for both teams, coaches, and supporters in the clubhouse.

A huge thank you to the parents, volunteers, and coaches for making the morning such a success, and to St Mary’s for travelling down for a fantastic contest.
