The 2026/27 competitive season got underway on Thursday evening (13th August), as a new-look Navan RFC Men’s 1st XV traveled to Shamrock Lodge, Drogheda for a hard-fought Round One clash against Boyne in the Leinster North-East McGowan Cup.
While the final scoreline read 31–5 in favor of the hosts, the match provided crucial live-game minutes and competitive steel for new Men’s Head Coach Dan Van Zyl’s squad, which featured a vibrant mix of debutants and experienced leaders.
The fixture kicked off at a blistering pace, with both teams bringing high physical intensity to collision areas. Navan struck first blood, carving open the hosts’ defense with a sharp backline attack that allowed debutant Callum Breeds to make a brilliant clean break and cross the whitewash for the opening try of the match.
The middle quarter proved to be an even, structured contest, with Navan’s set-piece standing tall through accurate lineout control from Ben McCreary and a powerful shift in the scrum from young tighthead Shane O’Connor.
However, as the half wore on, Boyne gathered momentum. Capitalizing on territorial position, the Drogheda men probed Navan’s edge defense effectively, running in three converted scores to take a 21–5 advantage into the halftime break.
The second half remained fiercely contested, with Navan’s defensive unit led by captain Kit Waddington and debutant Niall Hurley, putting in heavy hits to disrupt Boyne’s momentum.
As the half progressed, Boyne introduced an experienced bench to dictate tempo and pin Navan in deep territory. While Boyne managed to add further scores to wrap up a 31–5 victory, the final scoreline did not fully reflect the balance of general play, where Boyne simply proved more clinical in turning Navan errors into points.
Despite the result, several Navan players delivered standout individual performances across the pitch. Debutant Callum Breeds announced his arrival in senior rugby in style, showing sharp instincts to finish a clean break for Navan’s lone try, while fellow debutant Niall Hurley brought relentless defensive energy to the back row with ferocious tackling throughout the contest.
In the pack, young tighthead prop Shane O’Connor put in a massive first-half shift at scrum time, supported by Ben McCreary, who expertly commanded Navan’s lineout operations to keep the set piece highly competitive.
In the backline, captain Kit Waddington led with tireless authority from half-back, while inside center Declan O’Connor provided a dependable physical platform with hard, front-foot carries into contact.
While naturally disappointed with the result, the fixture yields valuable diagnostic footage for the coaching staff as pre-season continues. With five adult teams fielded for the 2026/27 campaign, the focus now shifts back to the training pitch at Balreask Old as the squad builds toward the remaining McGowan Cup fixtures, upcoming Leinster Senior Pennant matches and Energia All-Ireland League campaigns.
