21 Feb Towns Cup XV Secure Strong Away Win in Div 2
Malahide 17 Navan 29
Leinster Metro League Premier 2 – Div 2 | Played at Skerries RFC 4G
Navan RFC’s Men’s “Towns Cup” (J1) XV were in Leinster Metro League Premier 2 – Div 2 action last weekend, travelling to face Malahide. With Malahide’s pitches deemed unplayable, the fixture was switched to the 4G surface at Skerries RFC.
Navan started brightly, playing into a stiff breeze and against the backdrop of an approaching storm. Despite the difficult conditions, they opened the scoring following excellent forward work and slick handling across the backline.
As the weather deteriorated, Malahide responded strongly. For a sustained 20-minute period, they pinned Navan inside their own half and were rewarded with two tries. However, Navan’s early work ensured they held a narrow 12–10 lead at half-time.
After the interval, conditions improved dramatically, the wind eased and the sun emerged allowing Navan to fully express themselves. Using pace, width and intelligent kicking, they began to stretch the Malahide defence. Three well-worked team tries followed as Navan took firm control of the contest.
The final scoreline of 29–17 did not fully reflect Navan’s overall dominance and work rate, but it marked a deserved and valuable away victory.
Player of the Match: Shane O’Connor
O’Connor delivered a powerful performance at tighthead prop, anchoring the scrum superbly and adding two tries to cap an outstanding display.
Further tries came from wingers Cian Quigley and Luke Dolan, while replacement fullback Cormac Horan also crossed the whitewash.
Out-half Jeaic Timmons contributed two conversions and used his long kicking game effectively throughout, consistently turning the Malahide pack and ensuring Navan played in the right areas of the pitch.
The result sees Navan move to the top of the Leinster League Premier Division 2 table and provides strong momentum as the squad continues building towards their Towns Cup Second Round clash against Athy on 8th March.
