Navan RFC Men’s Under 20s were edged out 33–29 by Wanderers on Sunday afternoon at Balreask Old in an entertaining and hard-fought Super Six encounter.
A strong breeze and a clinical start from the visitors proved decisive, with Wanderers crossing for two tries inside the opening seven minutes to take early control of proceedings.
Playing into the elements in the first half, Navan found themselves under immediate pressure. Wanderers capitalised on territory and momentum to build an early lead, putting the home side on the back foot.
Navan responded with determination, gradually working their way back into the contest through strong carries and improved field position. However, just as momentum began to swing, Wanderers struck again to maintain their advantage heading into the break.
Navan showed real character after the restart. Lachlan Maguire led the charge with a superb two-try performance, while further scores from Noah Kavanagh, Declan O’Connor, and Caolan Duffy kept the pressure firmly on the visitors.
Out-half Ciall Flynn added two important conversions as Navan narrowed the gap and brought the home crowd into the contest.
Despite closing to within touching distance, another scoring burst from Wanderers in the second half ultimately proved decisive, with Navan just falling short in a thrilling finale.
Lachlan Maguire was named Navan RFC Player of the Match (sponsored by The Central, Navan) following a powerful all-round display and two well-taken tries.
