31 Mar Under 13 Boys Impress in High-Scoring Win Over Monkstown
Navan U13 Boys delivered a superb all-round performance on Sunday, running out convincing 52–19 winners away to Monkstown in challenging windy conditions.
In a memorable start to the day, the teams were treated to a unique spectacle as the 171 “Slieve Gullion” steam train locomotive passed by the pitch, sounding its whistle as the players lined up, an unforgettable moment for all involved.
Led by captain Aidan O’Connor, Navan showed great intent from the outset, even while playing with 14 players against Monkstown’s 15.
The visitors struck first through Alex Patterson, who finished a well-worked team move in the corner. Harry Russell, playing at out-half, added an excellent touchline conversion into the wind to give Navan an early lead.
Momentum continued to build as Casey Reynolds crossed for Navan’s second try following strong phase play, again converted by Russell. Tadhg Sheridan added another with a powerful carry, before the moment of the match arrived.
A sweeping move across the pitch, featuring excellent support lines and handling, saw prop Sennan O’Neill dive over for his first-ever Navan try, a special moment for both player and team.
Navan also showed their defensive resolve before halftime, holding out Monkstown with disciplined and determined goal-line defence during a sustained period of pressure.
The second half saw Navan continue to apply pressure. Freddie Davis crossed from the back row, while Reynolds completed an excellent hat-trick. Sheridan added his second try as the visitors extended their lead.
Russell was influential throughout, converting all but two of Navan’s tries in difficult conditions.
Monkstown responded with three well-taken tries of their own, but Navan’s overall performance ensured a deserved victory.
James Burns was named Player of the Match for an outstanding display in both attack and defence, and will captain the side in their next fixture.
The day was rounded off with excellent hospitality from Monkstown, before many of the squad made their way to Croke Park to enjoy Meath’s victory over Cork, a fitting end to a great day for the team.
