Navan RFC Women’s 2nd XV were narrowly defeated 38–28 by Clondalkin RFC in an entertaining semi-final of the Leinster Paul Cusack Plate at Balreask Old on Sunday.
In a fiercely contested encounter, Navan showed tremendous character throughout, with the team effort evident across the pitch in what proved to be a highly competitive clash.
After conceding two early tries, Navan responded brilliantly to take control of the first half, finishing strongly to lead 14–10 at the break. Their momentum continued into the second half, with Niamh Lister producing a superb solo try, collecting the ball inside her own half and beating multiple defenders on a powerful run to the line.
Further tries from Siobhán Beggy, Rhiannon Hoey and Martina O’Neill, along with four conversions from Anna McGarry, kept Navan firmly in the contest.
However, Clondalkin responded strongly in the latter stages, regaining the lead and extending their advantage. Despite battling until the final whistle, handling errors at key moments proved costly for Navan as they pushed to close the gap.
Player of the Match Martina O’Neill delivered an outstanding performance, reflecting the determination shown across the entire squad.
While the result did not go their way, Navan can take great credit from a spirited display that showcased their resilience and teamwork.
